52: A Literary Location DONE!
Mississippi River, Minneapolis, MN. September 2013. The Mighty Mississippi has been a backdrop to plenty of American literature, and was the setting of some of Mark Twain's most popular work, including his stories about Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, as well as his memoirs.
Although the river runs right through Minneapolis/St. Paul, we got to experience it in a brand new way this fall. We were invited by Chris's parents to join them on their first ever trip through a lock on the Mississippi River! They wanted to try a test run to figure out how it worked before they left on their long trip down the river, where they would have to go through a whole bunch of locks. It was pretty amazing!
First we had to wait for the giant doors to open, then we went into the lock and the doors closed behind us. We held on to ropes hanging down from the sides while the lock filled with water and lifted us until we were up at the top! It took about 10 minutes. That simple, but really really crazy awesome to get to experience!
They let Cook drive their boat, and he did a great job!
After we went up the lock, we went all the way up to the University of Minnesota and got an amazing view of downtown from the water! Then we turned around and went back down the lock. Locks are amazing!
