44: A Folk or Junk Art Creation DONE!

Enchanted Highway. July 26, 2010. The enchanted highway is the stretch of road that goes from the I-94 south 32 miles to the town of Regent, ND. There are a total of 8 big metal sculptures peppered along the highway, which one sign in Regent calls "the road of anticipation." There is a lot of waiting and straining the eyes between sculptures, and they vary in impressiveness for sure, but overall it was a detour definitely worth taking.

The artist's name is Gary Greff, and he's been working on this project since 1991. He started it as a way to try to draw interstate traffic to his hometown of Regent, to try to keep the town from dying. He is actually a school teacher!

Some of the sculptures had interactive elements that were sketchy due to their rusty, raw-edged state. It was hard to let the kids play on them. The derelict condition of the art seemed sort of fitting, though, considering that these behemoth sculptures are in the ABSOLUTE middle of nowhere...

This crazy structure is in the town of Regent. It is made of all different sorts of reclaimed/found items, including a car hood, a wheelbarrow, and a lawnmower! Dig the farm implements in the background~

The weather was super crazy all day, and from our vantage point in the giant underwater sculpture we watched a tornado form and touch down. We found out later that it hit a little town called Amidon. Wow!
