26: A Big Cave DONE!

October 2014. Spook Cave & Campground, McGregor IA.  We stayed one night at this campground and the next morning we got up and went on the Spook Cave boat tour. The cave was originally just a 6-inch opening in a stone cliff and people could hear strange, spooky noises coming from it. In the 1950's, a man used dynamite to open the hole and spent the next many years clearing out mud and gunk from what turned out to be an expansive cave system.

The opening to the cave is still not very big, and we all had to duck at the beginning and at a couple of other times in the tour because the ceiling was so low. It was very dark and drippy and claustrophobic, but we saw frogs and lots of tiny, fuzzy bats inside the cave. Rowan fell asleep, but the rest of us enjoyed the tour!

The grounds around the cave was also pretty fun to explore, and we had a picnic lunch at the playground. They also had a game room and a really cool water wheel that used to generate the power for the lights in the cave. Extra bonus: we got to drive through Amish country to get to this place!
